Panerai unveils a 44mm stainless steel Luminor with automatic GMT caliber and a 10-day power reserve. As part of the Complicazioni collection, which includes chronographs and high-end complications, the GMT allows the tracking of dual time zones. With the polished cushion-shaped case, sandwich dial, and recognizable crown protector, this new PAM01482 includes many notable Panerai features. But while the model plays it safe and stays within the Panerai formula, the combination of details makes for an attractive watch. Is it enough to inspire would-be Panerai owners? Let's find out.Following Panerai's Luna Rossa-heavy campaign at Watches and Wonders, many on the Fratello team wondered if this was it. While none of the 2024 Panerai releases (PAM01405, PAM01466, and PAM1507) are out of character for Panerai, the marketing message was a bit one note. Considering the niche appeal of co-branding with an America's Cup team at the most significant watch fair, the focus was relatively narrow. Yes, Panerai's partnership with Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli as the official sponsor of the Italian sailing team at the 37th America's Cup is undoubtedly important. Since the next triennial/quadrennial event will take place this year, it makes sense to showcase this partnership. Still, in his hands-on review of these watches, Fratello editor Thomas van Straaten rightfully pondered, Who are these co-branded watches for?Panerai Luminor Dieci Giorni GMT PAM01482The Luminor Dieci Giorni moves away from the Luna Rossa theme to target a more general audience. However, the blue sunray-brushed dial shares the color with the PAM01466 from Watches and Wonders. With its outsize numerals and elongated indices stenciled out of the dial, the white Super-LumiNova layer provides low-light luminosity. Nicknamed the sandwich due to its construction, the dial retains glow through a wider surface area. There are also two cutouts on the AM/PM indicator at 9 o'clock to allow the lume layer underneath to shine through. The date window at 3 o'clock somewhat offsets the small seconds sub-dial, but the linear power reserve indicator at 6 o'clock takes center stage. The slider moves across as the 240 hours of power retained within the mainspring barrel are gradually released.Powering this watch is the P.2003 movement, the first automatic caliber developed by Panerai at its manufacture in Neuchatel, Switzerland. While the caliber has been around for a while, Panerai is leaning heavily on its Italian roots with the dial text. Instead of 10 Days beneath the power indicator, it reads 10 Giorni. The long power reserve refers to Panerai's 1960s models that utilized an Angelus SF240 movement with an eight-day power reserve. The caliber in the Dieci Giorni GMT has 25 jewels, a 28,800vph frequency, a Kif shock protection, and a seconds-reset mechanism. This caliber propels all five hands on the dial side but is visible through the sapphire crystal on the back of the case. Despite the exhibition window, the Panerai achieves 100m water resistance. Yet, with Panerai's Marina Militare history, I would've expected at least a 300m rating. Then again, the Submersible range targets this depth. Final specs and pricingOf course, Panerai adds a bit of contingency to the depth rating by subjecting each watch to 25% pressure above the guaranteed water resistance. This additional step allows for a margin of error if the watch reaches these depths. The likelihood of that, however, is low as this Panerai doesn't come cheap. Even in the steel case, the Luminor Dieci Giorni GMT PAM01482 is 13,200. Panerai is punching high with its pricing these days, but this is still a tough pill to swallow. At least you get two straps, one in dark blue alligator leather and a second rubber strap in the same color. What are your thoughts on the new model from Panerai?
