The Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award 50th Anniversary is here, and I am convinced this was not what you expected! A beautiful mechanical animation on the case back and powered by the caliber 3861.Meanwhile, our hands-on review of this new Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award can be found here. Here it is, the Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award 50th Annniversary. Finally, I might add, as we've been waiting for it for months. There was no Baselworld or Time to Move this year, so Omega decided to spread the introductions of their new watches over the year. October 5 marks the date on which Omega received the Silver Snoopy Award from the Apollo 13 crew in 1970. So, there's no date that's more spot on to introduce this watch than today.Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award 50th AnniversaryThis is not a limited edition. For some, a blessing, as they now have a very fair shot on obtaining one for their collection. To others, a bit of a let-down as part of the fun is being able to get one and collect limited editions. In whatever camp you are, the watch itself is without a doubt a surprise. And a pleasant one!AnimationBefore discussing the dial, we have a look at the case back. Powered by Omega's new hand-wound caliber 3861 that was introduced last year in the Apollo XI watches. Based on the caliber 1861, but 50% of the parts are new and it has been Master Chronometer certified by METAS. Pushing the chronograph will start moving the rocket on which watchdog Snoopy sits in his little rocket. In 14 seconds, he will float over Earth. And a few moments later, he will disappear behind the moon surface again. Earth is orbiting as well, as it is connected to the small running seconds. The rocket is mounted to an almost invisible hand that can only be seen under certain angles.Snoopy DialThere were some rumors already that the dial included blue, but nobody exactly knew what it would be like. Now you know! A blue panda basically, with a silver (ag925) off-white dial and blue sub dials. On the left sub dial, you will find the space Snoopy with 50th Anniversary written above it. The ceramic bezel has the same tone of blue as the sub dials. As said, the watch is not a limited edition. That might make the 50th Anniversary writing on the sub-dial a bit awkward when this watch will be still in production in 2021 or 2022. But it is nothing to get worked up about.Blue StrapThe soft strap is something else! Perhaps you'd expected the steel bracelet from the Caliber 321 (or Apollo XI 50th in steel), but Omega decided to fit a blue soft strap with black lining. On the lining, a few references to the Apollo 13 mission. Like the flight path of the mission and where exactly the explosion took place and where the Speedmaster was used to time those important 14 seconds.105.012 CaseMany of you hoped it would be either a straight-lug case (like the Caliber 321 Ed White) or a 105.012 case, with the double bevel case back. It is the latter, as you can see. The case back has a NAIAD lock, meaning the position is aligned. In the case back, you will find the engravings on the caliber 3861 movement, the Master Chronometer co-axial movement and that you're dealing with the Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award watch here.Caliber 3861Some expected caliber 321 to be used, but if you give it some thought, it is hardly possible to allocate that movement to other watches than the Caliber 321 Ed White and the platinum. Omega can only do a certain number of those (2000 at maximum per year, but certainly not this year). The Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award 50th Anniversary is the third watch to use the caliber 3861, after the two Apollo XI models. From my own experience, I can tell you it is a brilliant movement with perfect performance. It is Master Chronometer certified, meaning its accuracy is between 0 and +5 seconds per day on average, and anti-magnetic > 15,000 gauss. The animation on the case back might need some extra power, but that has been compensated by the lightweight hands on the front of the watch.Special BoxThe Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award 50th Anniversary comes in a very nice blue box. A smaller version of the large Moonwatch box, with a Snoopy patch on there.Hands-onI am looking forward to getting my hands-on this Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award 50th anniversary soon.
